Fiquei imensamente feliz com o convite que recebi dos Correios para ilustrar minha avó Clarice em seu centenário!
Homenageá-la, é sempre uma grande aventura de entrega intuitiva! Diferente de outras tentativas em que utilizei fotografias como base, dessa vez senti vontade de construir todo o seu rosto e o fundo a partir de retalhos de cartas, páginas de livro antigos e envelopes que encontrei da própria Clarice como forma de homenageá-la e também sua paixão por correspondências.
Somos de diferentes épocas, mas compartilhamos desse íntimo prazer pelo analógico. Eu coleciono selos, postais e cartas antigas que utilizo em minhas colagens a muitos anos, e ter tido a oportunidade de desenvolver algo que gosto tanto com total liberdade foi maravilhoso!
Centenário do Nascimento de Clarice Lispector

O serviço dos Correios sempre representou muito para literatura brasileira, através dele muitos escritores jovens se beneficiaram da experiência dos mais velhos e puderam crescer e expandir suas obras. Particularmente para minha mãe, Clarice Lispector, que morou quase 20 anos no exterior, a correspondência com amigos, família e editores foi fundamental na sua formação profissional e sua afetividade. Assim, a criação de um selo no ano do seu centenário é uma homenagem justa e muito representativa e vem de encontro à publicação neste ano da tão esperada antologia Todas as Cartas.
Centenário do Nascimento de Clarice Lispector

A ligação de Clarice Lispector com as longas distâncias começou desde o nascimento em 10 de dezembro de 1920. Nascida na Ucrânia, em Tchetchelnik, era descendente de judeus russos. Seus pais, Pedro e Marian, tiveram três filhas: Elisa, Tania e Clarice. Com um ano e dois meses mudou-se para o Brasil com a família fugindo dos pogroms (ataques contra a população judaica) e da miséria que assolava a Europa. Residiu três anos em Maceió, mas foi em Recife que viveu até os 14 anos; estudou no Ginásio Pernambucano, morou no bairro da Boa Vista e se inspirou às margens do Capibaribe. Daí lhe ficariam as primeiras histórias e os temperos pernambucanos.
Em 1935, mudou-se para o Rio de Janeiro em companhia do pai e das irmãs, a mãe falecera em Recife. Residiu na Tijuca, no Catete e no Flamengo, cursou Direito na Universidade do Brasil, onde conheceu o futuro marido, o diplomata Maury Gurgel Valente. Sua retumbante estreia literária com Perto do Coração Selvagem (1943) foi a senha para seguir o destino de escritora: escreveu dezessete livros entre romances, contos, crônicas e histórias infantis que já alcançaram cerca de quarenta países e lhe alçaram ao patamar de uma das maiores escritoras do século XX.
A intimidade com as palavras lhe garantiu um lugar como redatora e repórter na Agência Nacional e no jornal A Noite nos anos 1940, em um tempo em que era raro ver mulheres nas redações. Foi cronista de sucesso no Jornal do Brasil, Última Hora e Correio do Povo; assinou páginas femininas sob pseudônimo em Comício, Correio da Manhã e Diário da Noite. Como entrevistadora em Manchete e Fatos & Fotos alcançou grande popularidade nos anos 1960.
Acompanhando o marido, morou em Belém, Nápoles e Berna, onde nasceu Pedro. Após uma breve volta ao Rio voltou a residir no exterior em Torquay (na Inglaterra) e Washington, local de nascimento de Paulo. Em Nápoles, alistou-se como voluntária para prestar solidariedade aos nossos pracinhas em plena Segunda Guerra Mundial. Para suportar a eterna saudade, fez das cartas a sua varinha de condão. O portador podia ser um correspondente de guerra ou um diplomata. Mas nos tempos de paz os Correios ocuparam essa missão. E quando chegava a resposta tinha “o sentido que teria abrir as janelas de um quarto onde eu estivesse fechada há semanas.” Depois de escrever mais de trezentas cartas chegou a hora de voltar ao Brasil. E foi assim, em julho de 1959, com trinta e nove anos de idade, que ela fincou definitivamente sua âncora no Leme – bairro carioca onde escreveu doze livros que abalaram os alicerces da linguagem de ficção – até seu falecimento em 9 de dezembro de 1977. Seu estilo inconfundível dominado por um clima poético produziu obras que se tornaram clássicos como A Maçã no Escuro, Laços de Família, A Paixão Segundo G.H, Água Viva e A Hora da Estrela.
Em um momento confessional revelou o valor das cartas dos leitores que recebia de todos os cantos do Brasil. Elas lhe aqueciam o coração: “quiseram me dar a mão para me ajudar a subir mais e ver de algum modo a grande paisagem do mundo.” E o que podemos nós, os leitores, no ano de seu centenário, dizer sobre como ela abriu e confortou nossos corações?

I was immensely happy with the invitation I received from the Correios Brasil to illustrate my grandmother Clarice in her centenary! Paying homage to her, it’s always a great adventure of intuitive delivery! Unlike other attempts in which I used photographs as a base, this time I felt like building all of her face and background from scraps of letters, old book pages and envelopes that I found from Clarice herself as a way to honor her and also her passion for mailing. We lived in different eras, but we share this intimate pleasure for analog things. I collect stamps, postcards and old letters that I have used in my collages for many years, and to have had the opportunity to develop something I like so much with complete freedom was wonderful!

Correios Brasil service always represented a lot for Brazilian literature: through it, many young writers benefited from the experience of their elders and were able to grow and expand their works. Particularly for my mother, Clarice Lispector, who lived almost 20 years abroad, her mailing with friends, family and editors was essential in her professional training and her affection. Thus, the creation of a postage stamp in the year of its centenary is a fair and very representative tribute. It also comes together with the publication, later this year, of the long-awaited anthology Todas as Cartas (All the Letters).
Birth Centenary of Clarice Lispector

Clarice Lispector’s connection with long distances began from birth on December 10th, 1920. Born in Ukraine, in Chechelnik, she was descended from Russian Jews. Her parents, Pedro and Marian, had three daughters: Elisa, Tania and Clarice. At the age of one year and two months, she moved to Brazil with her family fleeing the pogroms (attacks against the Jewish population) and the misery that plagued Europe. They lived in Maceió for three years, but it was in Recife that she lived until she was 14; she studied at Ginásio Pernambucano, lived in the Boa Vista neighborhood and was inspired by the banks of Capibaribe. Hence the first stories and spices from Pernambuco would remain.
In 1935, she moved to Rio de Janeiro in the company of her father and sisters (her mother past in away in Recife). She lived in Tijuca, Catete and Flamengo, studied law at the University of Brazil, where she met her future husband, diplomat Maury Gurgel Valente. Her resounding literary debut with Perto do Coração Selvagem (Close to the wild heart, 1943) was the password to follow the fate of a writer: she wrote seventeen books among novels, short stories, chronicles and children’s stories that have already reached about forty countries and have raised her to the level of one of the largest 20th century writers.
Her Intimacy with words guaranteed a place as a writer and reporter at the National Agency and in the newspaper A Noite in the 1940s, at a time when it wasn’t usual to see women in newsrooms. She was a successful chronicler at Jornal do Brasil, Ultima Hora and Correio do Povo; she signed female pages under a pseudonym in Comício, Correio da Manhã and Diário da Noite. As an interviewer in Manchete e Fatos & Fotos she achieved great popularity in the 1960s.
Accompanying her husband, she lived in Belém, Naples and Bern, where Pedro was born. After a brief trip to Rio, she returned to live abroad in Torquay (England) and Washington, where Paulo was born. In Naples, she enlisted as a volunteer to give solidarity to our soldiers in the middle of World War II. In order to endure her feeling of missing, she made the letters her magic wand. The bearer could be a war correspondent or a diplomat. But in times of peace, the post office occupied this mission. And when the answer came, it had “the sense that it would have opened the windows of a room where I had been closed for weeks.” After writing more than three hundred letters, it was time to return to Brazil. And so it was in July 1959, at the age of thirty-nine, that she definitely anchored in Leme – neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro where she wrote twelve books that shook the foundations of the language of fiction – until her death on December 9th, 1977. Her unmistakable style dominated by a poetic atmosphere produced works that became classics such as A maçã no escuro (The Apple in the Dark), Laços de família (Family Ties), A paixão segundo G.H (The Passion According to G.H.), Água Viva (The Stream of Life) and A hora da estrela (The Hour of the Star).
In a confessional moment, she revealed the value of the letters she received from readers from all over Brazil. They warmed her heart: “they wanted to give me a hand to help me climb higher and somehow to see the great landscape of the world.” And what can we, the readers, in the year of her centenary, say about how she opened and comforted our hearts?
