Sobre o Bloco
O bloco é formado por quatro fotos de postais que retratam exemplares da arquitetura carioca localizados na área portuária do Rio de Janeiro. Na parte superior esquerda é possível ver um detalhe do exuberante altar da Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, localizado dentro do Mosteiro de São Bento. Logo abaixo está focalizado o moderno Museu do Amanhã. Ao lado direito, na parte superior, está o MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio, com um VLT completando a paisagem urbana. E por fim, no quadrante inferior direito, o histórico Cais do Valongo. As técnicas usadas foram fotografia e arte digital.
Série América - UPAEP: Arquitetura
O Rio de Janeiro apresenta em seus 1.204 quilômetros quadrados de área, exuberante natureza, com 84 quilômetros de praias, três maciços - Pedra Branca, Tijuca e Gericinó/Mendanha – e dezenas de parques públicos. Há também inúmeros monumentos, museus, igrejas e belos edifícios, construídos em todos os períodos da sua história e ainda preservados, fazendo dela um museu a céu aberto em todas as regiões. Tendo em vista esta combinação tão especial, o Rio recebeu da UNESCO o título de Patrimônio da Humanidade na categoria Paisagem Cultural Urbana – Paisagens cariocas entre a montanha e o mar - em 2012. Em 2019, a cidade foi novamente reconhecida como referência arquitetônica mundial pela UNESCO, título até então inédito no mundo. Por isso, neste ano de 2020, na Série América, os Correios homenageiam esta importante cidade, que se destaca por ter representação de 5 séculos de arquitetura e ter eminência histórica desde os tempos coloniais.
O Rio de Janeiro tem exemplares que representam a arquitetura brasileira de todos os períodos, o que justifica sua escolha para emissão postal. Fundada em 1º de março de 1565, foi capital do vice-reinado de 1763 a 1808. A partir deste ano, tornou-se sede do Império Português, e posteriormente, capital da República até 1960. Tendo em vista esta importância política, a cidade recebeu muitos investimentos em obras públicas de infraestrutura, embelezamento e equipamentos públicos ao longo destes séculos.
Sua arquitetura civil – de residências, palácios e prédios públicos - fabril, bem como a religiosa, sofreu influência de diversos movimentos arquitetônicos europeus que se sucederam ao longo dos anos, tais como barroco, rococó, neoclássico, eclético, art decó, até chegar ao modernismo carioca, que ganhou repercussão internacional devido à grande qualidade e criatividade das obras de Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Jorge Moreira, Irmãos Roberto, Sergio Bernardes, entre outros.
Para representar a arquitetura brasileira e carioca nestes selos, foram escolhidas quatro fotos da zona portuária, vizinha ao Centro, também conhecida como Porto Maravilha, demonstrando a evolução urbana da cidade, bem como destacando uma região do Rio de Janeiro que possui representação de diversos séculos de arquitetura.
A primeira localização escolhida apresenta o exuberante altar mor rococó talhado a ouro da Igreja de São Bento, que contrasta com a austeridade das suas fachadas. Situada na rua Dom Gerardo, 68, a obra foi iniciada em 1617, representa o período colonial e é tombada pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional – IPHAN, desde 1938.
A segunda apresenta o sítio arqueológico Cais do Valongo, na rua Barão de Tefé. Reconhecido pela UNESCO como Patrimônio da Humanidade em 2017, este sítio, aberto ao público, faz parte do circuito cultural e turístico denominado Pequena África, e mantém viva a memória do desembarque de centenas de milhares de africanos escravizados nos séculos passados e sua importância na constituição da cidade.
A terceira representa a própria evolução urbana da região, com a praça Mauá reurbanizada, o Veículo Leve sobre Trilhos e o Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR, projeto do escritório Bernardes + Jacobsen Arquitetura, que reabilitou edificações de diferentes estilos e períodos do século XX em um importante museu municipal, com atividades artísticas e educativas no século XXI.
A quarta foto, com a praça Mauá e o Museu do Amanhã, obra do arquiteto espanhol Santiago Calatrava, representa a renovação dos espaços públicos da região portuária, palco de inúmeros eventos e com enorme potencial turístico.
Com estes selos, celebramos o Rio de Janeiro, seu passado, presente e futuro.

About the Souvenir Sheet
The souvenir sheet consists of four postcard photos that depict examples of Rio’s architecture located in the port area of Rio de Janeiro. In the upper left part you can see a detail of the exuberant altarpiece of the Church of Nossa Senhora de Montserrat, located inside the Monastery of São Bento. Just below is the modern Museum of Tomorrow. On the right side, at the top, is MAR - Museum of Art of Rio, with a Light Vehicle on Rails completing the urban landscape. And finally, in the lower right quadrant, the historic Cais do Valongo. The techniques used were photography and digital art.
America Series - UPAEP: Architecture
Rio de Janeiro has 1,204 square kilometers (464.867 square miles) of exuberant nature, with 84 kilometers (52.2 miles) of beaches, three massifs - Pedra Branca, Tijuca and Gericinó / Mendanha - and dozens of public parks. There are also countless monuments, museums, churches and beautiful buildings, built in all periods of its history and still preserved, turning it into an open-air museum. In view of this very special combination, Rio had already received UNESCO’s recognition as a World Heritage Site in the Urban Cultural Landscape category in 2012 - Carioca landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea. In 2019, the city was once again recognized as a world architectural reference by UNESCO, a title previously unheard of in the world. Therefore, in this year of 2020, in the America Series, Correios pays homage to this important city, which stands out for representing 5 centuries of architecture and having historical eminence since colonial times.
Rio de Janeiro has examples that represent Brazilian architecture from all periods. Founded on March 1st, 1565, it was the capital of the viceroyalty from 1763 to 1808. From this year on, it became the seat of the Portuguese Empire, and later, capital of the Republic until 1960. In view of this political importance, the city received many investments in public infrastructure works, beautification and public equipment over these centuries.
Its civil - of residences, palaces and public buildings - industrial, as well as religious architecture was influenced by several European architectural movements that succeeded over the years, such as Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Eclectic, Art Deco, until reaching the carioca modernism, which gained international repercussion due to the great quality and creativity of the works of Lucio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Jorge Moreira, bothers Roberto and Sergio Bernardes, among others.
To represent Brazilian and Carioca architecture on these stamps, four photos of the port area, next to the Center, also known as Porto Maravilha, were chosen, demonstrating the urban evolution of the city, presented here clockwise.
The first one presents the exuberant Rococo altarpiece carved in gold from the Church of São Bento, which contrasts with the austerity of its facades. Located at 68 Dom Gerardo street, the construction initiated in 1617, represents the colonial period and has been listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute - IPHAN, since 1938.
The second stamp presents the archaeological site Cais do Valongo, on Barão de Tefé street. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2017, this site, open to the public, is part of the cultural and tourist circuit called Little Africa, and keeps alive the memory of the landing of hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans in the past centuries and its importance in the constitution of the city.
The third stamp represents the urban evolution of the region itself, with the re-urbanized Mauá square, the Light Vehicle on Rails and the Art Museum of Rio - MAR, project by Bernardes & Jacobsen Arquitetura, which rehabilitated buildings of different styles and periods of the 20th century turning them into an important municipal museum that offers artistic and educational activities of the 21st century.
The fourth photo, with the Mauá square and the Museum of Tomorrow, the work of the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, represents the renovation of public spaces in the port region, the stage of numerous events and with enormous tourist potential.
With these stamps, we celebrate Rio de Janeiro, its past, present and future.
